I have always been a World War II buff and can’t pass up a good documentary on Netflix or reading a good book about some of the battles that our soldiers fought worldwide to ensure our freedom. One of my favorite movies is Saving Private Ryan as I thought that was an incredible portrayal of D-Day.
In reality, there were real people climbing those bunkers, getting shot at, and seeing the horrors around them.
And those heroes are still among us now, but the number of them are falling fast. We are losing 762 World War II veterans per day, 492 Korean War veterans per day, and 367 Vietnam War veterans per day. Many of these veterans are in their 80’s and 90’s and have health issues. Time is not on our side to properly thank these veterans and honor them for their service.
The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight is a non-profit organization that honors veterans by flying World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans to Washington D.C. to visit their memorials and the changing of the guard. All flights are paid for by donations and both the organization and Honor Flight day are staffed by volunteers. The Honor Flight day is an incredible one and very emotional for these Vets. On the flight home, they receive an old fashioned “Mail Call” from their family, friends, and even strangers thanking them for their service. Finally, there is a Homecoming reception at the airport attended by thousands of cheering people, bands, cheerleaders, and other current service members that give our heroes the Welcome Home and thanks that they deserve.
My daughter Megan and I attended the Honor Flight- Welcome Home event at Mitchell Field Airport in April. Thousands of people turned the upper level of the airport into a Fourth of July celebration. We both had tears in our eyes and chills hearing the cheers of the crowd when the wheelchair brigade of our heroes went through the crowd. It was an amazing experience!
A big reason that I wanted to start my own insurance agency was that I enjoy helping people. Our agency created a Community Cause program, where we choose a local non-profit or family in need that we can help out with. Our current Community Cause is the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight where we will support the effort to get as many veterans as possible on an Honor Flight to see their memorials and be recognized for their service in a big way.
From now until August 31, for every person that you recommend we talk to- we will donate $10 to the Honor Flight. If the people that you recommend gets a quote, we will either donate an additional $10 to the Honor Flight or give you a $10 Amazon Gift Card for yourself (your choice). Our goal is to raise $1000 for the Honor Flight.
